Spring is here...and so is Pollen

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I did 40 today and the pollen was so heavy, it was like riding in a mist! Seriously. There were areas where you could literally see "clouds" of pollen across the road. Lucky for me I have no allergies.

I'm usually suffering real bad by now but it hasn't hit yet. I'm crossing my fingers that it will stay away until summer when everything gets killed by the searing heat.

* Claritin generics
* Sinus irrigation!
It feels like you're drowning but it works better than anything else.

For some reason I'm not affected in my lungs, just my eyes. For about three months I have to wear goggles. I don't mind too much training on my own; but, in groups, I get somewhat self-conscious over how ridiculous I look.

OTC Claritin
Shower immediately after riding
Change A/C filters monthly
Pollen is worse in the morning, consider riding later in the day after it settles somewhat
Nasal and Sinus irrigation, available at most larger drugstores
If you're still symptomatic, see your doctor for prescription strength meds.
The good news is that the tree pollen season will last approximately 4 more weeks, grass pollen will follow in the summer months. I hope this helps

Eugene gets it bad every year too. We don't reach 5000, but we'll spend a month in the 1000 range. I take benadryl before bed (helps me sleep, seems to keep it in the system enough to take the edge off) and I take a shower before bed to get the pollen off my skin and out of my hair. Mostly I just sneeze a lot.
