I would ask what the goal is - if you only replace the FD and cranks, I'd imagine you have most of the disadvantages of a triple mixed the reduced gear range and/or overlap of a double. I'd imagine if you want the advantages of a double, you'll want to replace more than that (short RD, BB maybe?).
