Most of my running is on off-road surfaces; easier on my feet. I've found them very comfortable on all the surfaces you mention.

As far as the additional costs go, if I was to attempt a full rationalization for the $, it might look like this:

the shoes I have been running in (Brooks Addictions, or equivalent) go for about $100-$110 where I live, so the extra costs for the Newtons is about $75. At 35-40 miles a week, I'll replace every 10 weeks, so the extra cost per week is $7.50 / week. In the real currency that Seattle residents care about, that amounts to 2 12 ounce, double-shot nonfat peppermint mochas per week, an expense I would incur without thinking about it, making the Newtons a bargain given that the training effect I get from them doesn't wear off in a few hours
