the bike store will tell you to use only cable cutters...but you can cut it with just about anything made to cut wire or cable...or even a hacksaw. I cut mine with snapon lineman pliers. just make sure you stick something in the end of the housing to open it back up again after you cut it...sometimes it crimps shut. I used the cutters they have at my lbs the first time and they crimped it shut also...
