Nothing new about this in italian bikes, even with steel frames, there were only really 2-3 manufacturers in the whole country.
What you say about steel frames in the old days is simply far from the truth. It isn't even true today; there are plenty of shops still making frames in Italy. Most are small and aren't distributed in the US. That doesn't mean there isn't a lot of outsourcing being done by Italian brands.....
