Gainesville has LBSs for almost every type of biking. There is one for Trek (which also happens to be the biggest one), one for used/swaps, one for mtbs, one for SS/fixed/custom frames, one for racers/TT/tris, one that is just there (last time I was in there, they had 4 bikes for sale), and one that mostly serves college students/racers. There are also two others I've never been in.. man I love this place.
Oh and one that sells Schwinns.
And if is sounds like way too many for a lil' place like Gainesville, it is. The Schwinn place and the race/TT/Tri place recently moved further than 5 miles away from where I live.
I'm not exactly sure which shops you're refering to, but I'll add my 2 cents.
One across the street from the university sold me my San Jose and has Surley parts in stock. On the other hand, at the one on the southwest side I got a strange look when I asked for a fixed geat cog. Guess where I went to have my GB IRO frame prepped?
Some of my favorite shops in town went out of business when UF linked up with the local bus system about 10 years ago so that the students could ride for free. Before that, you'd get so many cyclists crossing Archer Road by Gatorwood that 6 lanes of traffic would be forced to stop. Ah, those were the days.....
