Gainesville has LBSs for almost every type of biking. There is one for Trek (which also happens to be the biggest one), one for used/swaps, one for mtbs, one for SS/fixed/custom frames, one for racers/TT/tris, one that is just there (last time I was in there, they had 4 bikes for sale), and one that mostly serves college students/racers. There are also two others I've never been in.. man I love this place.
Oh and one that sells Schwinns.
And if is sounds like way too many for a lil' place like Gainesville, it is. The Schwinn place and the race/TT/Tri place recently moved further than 5 miles away from where I live.

One across the street from the university sold me my San Jose and has Surley parts in stock. On the other hand, at the one on the southwest side I got a strange look when I asked for a fixed geat cog. Guess where I went to have my GB IRO frame prepped?
Some of my favorite shops in town went out of business when UF linked up with the local bus system about 10 years ago so that the students could ride for free. Before that, you'd get so many cyclists crossing Archer Road by Gatorwood that 6 lanes of traffic would be forced to stop. Ah, those were the days.....

Bikes: Trek 1000, two mtbs and working on a fixie for commuting.
I'm not exactly sure which shops you're refering to, but I'll add my 2 cents.

The fixed shop I mentioned is Bikes & More.
Swap/used shop is Recycled Bikes.
Higher end TT/Tri and random Dean Ti mtb frames would be The Bike Route.
The Schwinn place is Streit's Cycles.
MTB place is Mr. Goodbike.
Trek would be Gator Cycle.
There are two others I've never entered.
All but the Trek place is north of Archer these days.

i've noticed most lbs here do not like people with fixed/ss bikes. the other day i asked my lbs about a 48t chainring for my fixed and the two guys working there went off about how trendy and lame fixed is and how there are absolutely no benifits to riding fixed and how i would never find a 48t chainring because people only ride 42t or 52t. others mechanics automatically get a bad attitude as soon as i mention that my bike is fixed.
