I haven't tried ultrasonic but my favorite cleaner right now is a spray can of brake parts cleaner - I use Pyroil that I buy at KMart for $1.99. Put the straw into any crevise and blast. Voila! that part is clean. It's made to use on automobile brake parts including the pads, so it's not going to hurt bike parts.
