Cork bar tape as is works just fine. Find a color that works for the bike and buy a dozen rolls.
With half a dozen flats per year, half a dozen dropped chains, that bar tape needs is going to look bad pretty soon - change needed several times a year at probably every 2K miles. Some of us just don't have the time to spend on fussing with tape.
