If you shellac cork tape like Rivendell says you can do to get that leather look does it make the cork tape rock hard or leave it soft.
I used amber shellac on natural cork bar tape this spring and it matched a Brooks honey saddle quite well (a much better match than the Brooks saddle and my @$$). It scuffs pretty easily. It's not hard or stiff in any way. I've heard it can turn white after rain, but I had it on the spare tire rack driving thru 300 miles of rain and it was fine. It's really cheap to try, go for it.
