I use the "dork cam." It is a Canon powershot SD100 mounted to an rei mini-tripod, then duct taped to a old bike helmet. You can see the results here, some shots were handlebar-mounted as well, using the rei mini-tripod:

I have been using the SD-100 for years to make my videos, on and off the bike. It limits you to 30 second clips max, which may not do for extensive mtb filming, but I find that the 30-second limit forces me to make quick decisions when I film and ensures that I don't pad my films with fluff.

Using your existing equipment creatively can lead to nice results.
