I would guess that it was an easy "quick win" of a product. Sort of like a bike shop's Franken-bike made from stuff lying around. There is no way that bike or any of it's components was designed from scratch.
They got to enter a new (for them) genre of cycling with minimal effort. Maybe not at the competition level, but at least at the recreation level, which is where the money is anyway.
