if you burned a hole in your tire, you might want to read up on skid patches and gear ratios. Certain tooth combinations of chainrings/cogs will put the skid patch on a tire in a different place for every revolution of the crank. [edit: never mind--I read too fast]
maybe the messenger kicked your butt because he's just a better rider. I doubt that has anything to do with having/not having a brake.
Also: just because you have a brake doesn't mean you have to use it. You can still skid to your heart's content and use the brake only when necessary.
