[What's wrong with the shifting? Are the shifters indexed? (Do they click and stop when you shift?)] Well, i had on a 10 speed cassette and the current shifter is an indexed 6 speed shifter. It just wouldn't work at all due to the spacing of the gear on the 10 speed cassette.
