I see them online too - and kept getting mad that the numbers would go up and then suddenly drop (since they had sent me a coupon in the mail that explained the drop

However, if you try adding your points to your cart at checkout, I think they only account for 1% off, instead of the expected 10% - so your 1000 points online are good for $1 off your order, as opposed to the $10 coupon you'd get in the mail.
At least this is what I saw when I tried to apply the 820 points I had online at the time - came to a whopping $0.82 off my order, so I cancelled that transaction!
