The "Look" style pedal will give you a much bigger feeling platform for your foot. In my opinion they do not provide as much of a perceivable float (essentially the amount of play that you will have while clipped in) as my eggbeaters, or anything for that matter. Yes, I used the red cleats. YMMV.

Anywho, I would suggest something like the Eggbeaters, or Speedplays, BeBops, etc. that would provide you with a good amount of float.

It seems to me that a toe problem would most likely be caused by your shoes, rather than the pedals. I have had my toes go numb from poor fitting shoes, but pedals have only ever given me problems with my knees. Maybe try some thinner socks, or lacing/velcroing the shoe more loosely.
