You should first take a look at your cleat position like others have said. Then I'd look at the shoes - shoes for cleats are usually stiff, so the pedal shape shouldn't really matter as it is the sole of the shoe transferring your stroke...but if your shoes are too stiff (pricey carbon soles) or too flexy (BMX/skate shoes) then you can certainly feel that. Since I'll be eligible for AARP next year, I put Dr. Shoals pads in all my shoes...but have had shoes that weren't improved by them and thus don't wear them anymore.
