I'd say you did pretty well for $30.

Most bike shops in the city will be able to remove those cranks for you, probably would be in the neighbourhood of $10 or so. As someone else said, keep the bottom bracket as it will be hard to replace, regardless of it's quality. Maybe regrease it but don't throw it out.

I wouldn't bother re-painting it, it really is a low-end frame from back in the day. Ride the hell out of it and upgrade the frame over time. If you really don't like the colour (I think it looks great), I know of a powder-coating place out in the west end that will strip it and coat it for $75; you will probably spend at least $30 on paint anyways, so get it done right.
