I totally agree.

When I'm riding, it's a tool for the purpose of getting physical exercise, being outdoors, socializing with other cyclists and a means to an end.

When I'm building, searching, designing, photographing, cleaning, tweaking, talking, repairing and just plain thinking about them, they are tools for my emotional well being.

So yes, they are tools. But they are not singular use tools.
