Do a little research. Ever hear of a "townie?" Ever see photos of cyclists in Amsterdam? Or notice how cycling developed over centuries past and what type of bikes people have been riding comfortably the *whole* time? "Road bikes make me uncomfortable" is an idiotic statement. Set it up the way you need to, and the frame almost doesn't matter (of course, unless you *prefer* a 35-lb. tank from a big-box store over a 15-lb. "road" frame). You can get a nice quality, inexpensive "road" frame and slap some cruiser bars on it, raise up the stem a little so you're not hunched over, and bingo! Cruiser! It'll be more pleasant to ride than some piece of ***** bike made from pot metal. That is, assuming you can get over the fact that some people might think you're riding a "road bike."

Also, to get that authentic weaving-across-the-sidewalk-in-flip-flops feeling after which it seems you're lusting, you could even lower the seat so your knees come up to your chin and your legs never get straighter than a 90-degree bend.
