The poor mans fixie

I was wandering about buying one of those wal-mart bikes(single speed) buying the hub and converting it to fixed gear.Would it work with the chainline and the fixed gear hub.

It would be cheaper to get a used rear wheel and buy a cheap roadbike from a thriftshop or something.

You started the Trek thread and, no offense, don't seem to listen. I think you should buy an old used roadbike as Jenkin suggested and convert it. Walmart bikes just won't do it, man.

Someone did this with a walmart mountain bike or something, not starting with a ss... search for "loctite walmart" or something.

i remember it had red and silver paint and had a giant plastic thing over the chainring, and there were pictures of it in front of a train.

Edit: I think the verdict was, not a good idea, since it fell apart in like two wweeks.

Also: buying new crappy gaspipe Wally World bikes make mother earth weep when there are beautiful old, lugged, horizontal dropout, non-frenchie frames littered throughout the world, convertible at your whim. And ridiculously cheap.

But alas, I have strong doubts mark will listen to our pleas, considering his actions in the Trek thread. Some people don't believe stores exist outside Walmart and that ebay, freecycle, and craigslist, local co-ops, and your neighbors' sheds are cheap bike goldmines.

I pity the person that sells him a bike off Craigslist, or the bike co-op, or the garage sale holder. Can you imagine the harrassment they'd get after the sale of their $50 bike? Stick to Walmart, dude.

Mark, if you're going to lace the hub yourself you can make it fit any chainline by using spacers and lacing the wheel with an offset.

Haven't we gone over this "hub-swapping doesn't quite work that way" BS before?

someone converted a target road bike in another thread.

if you can get a cheap frame then get a cheap frame. some people live in a city where bikes are plentiful and one can get a decent frame by just walking to a garage sale or a goodwill. i've even searched for a decent frame and never found one, had to order one. do what you want.

Just a question. Why do you want a "fixie" cruser? I just assume cruser= coaster brake.

Do a little research. Ever hear of a "townie?" Ever see photos of cyclists in Amsterdam? Or notice how cycling developed over centuries past and what type of bikes people have been riding comfortably the *whole* time? "Road bikes make me uncomfortable" is an idiotic statement. Set it up the way you need to, and the frame almost doesn't matter (of course, unless you *prefer* a 35-lb. tank from a big-box store over a 15-lb. "road" frame). You can get a nice quality, inexpensive "road" frame and slap some cruiser bars on it, raise up the stem a little so you're not hunched over, and bingo! Cruiser! It'll be more pleasant to ride than some piece of ***** bike made from pot metal. That is, assuming you can get over the fact that some people might think you're riding a "road bike."

Also, to get that authentic weaving-across-the-sidewalk-in-flip-flops feeling after which it seems you're lusting, you could even lower the seat so your knees come up to your chin and your legs never get straighter than a 90-degree bend.

Mark, have you looked at any Treks? This one ssounds like it would deliver the riding position you're looking for, along with wide tires for dealing with the mean streets of Whiting.

https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes...rclassicsteel/

I read that the build quality on these is top-of-the-line, worthy of the Trek(R) name.

Bikes: Crappy but operational secondhand Motobecane Messenger

I ride a 350 dollar motobecane messenger.

Cheap ... lousy wheels, but it gets the job done.

this guy is a troll or idiot, just ignore him. He isn't going to listen to anybody, yet he comes on here and asks for advice. Just go waste money on your walmart bike mark9950.
