I ride the Amtrak Palmetto fairly regularly between Charleston, SC and Fayetteville, NC. I have carted a couple of full sized bikes back and forth. I pay $15 for a bike box and it rides as checked baggage. YMMV depending on which train you ride. Best bet is to call 1800-USA-RAIL and ask. But! the station agents may say otherwise. AFAIK any of the longer haul Amtrak trains will take a boxed bike. The last two times I just kept my box and reused it.
