Anyone ever travel by train with your bike? I plan on going from Chicago to Baltimore sometime in the next month.

I ride the Amtrak Palmetto fairly regularly between Charleston, SC and Fayetteville, NC. I have carted a couple of full sized bikes back and forth. I pay $15 for a bike box and it rides as checked baggage. YMMV depending on which train you ride. Best bet is to call 1800-USA-RAIL and ask. But! the station agents may say otherwise. AFAIK any of the longer haul Amtrak trains will take a boxed bike. The last two times I just kept my box and reused it.

It is really up to the conductor of the train. I used the train the other day and I was suppose to have a box. the conductor said no problem and hung it in the baggage car for me.

Yep ... Sacrament to Eugene.

Go to the Amtrak website. If the station in question has full baggage capacity, you can drop your bicycle off or pick it up. If it doesn't, you can't.
