Do you have a double or a triple crank? Just thought if you find it hard to keep your speed, sometimes it's because you need to start off from a lower front cog, so that you can keep your pedal revs up but without putting too much load on your legs. A triple cog allows you to do this. Sorry if I completely missed your problem there!!!
