you also won't have to get a wider chainring or cog, since the larger chain will sit on 1/8" bits just fine.
that strikes me as a really silly option.
Pardon my ignorance, but does that not hold true for 1/8" over 3/32" as well? And I do think a wider, thicker, chain, made of the same material as a 1/8" or 3/32" chain will be stronger. Sorry for being so silly and clearly wrong.
Yes, a 3/16" will sit on a 1/8" fine, just as a 1/8" will sit on a 3/32", but it will have side-to-side play. Hence, the caveat, 'if you're serious' - then I would go all out for something custom machined, if you buy parts, they should fit. I don't buy a 1" threadless fork and put it in my 1 1/8" headset because it will 'fit just fine'.
I do think it would be silly to get something custom machined, I highly doubt the wattage put out by the OP will ever need it. But if you're serious, then that is a option.
