It does sound like something in the bottom bracket. It may just need to be adjusted. Or if it is a cartridge it may need to be replaced. Look here. http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=93.
It is most likely a loose ball bottom bracket so it will just need to be repacked and adjusted.
