Can I use smaller width tires on 1 1/4" Araya rims? For instance 1 1/8" or even 1"?

BTW the Panaracer in the rear of my 88 Schwinn WS is too tall and nearly rubs. Wondering if anyone else finds that a problem and if so what tires you use to leave room enough for fenders.

Thanks.
There are variations in manufacturer's sizes for both tires and rims. I have wienmann rims that are clearly marked 27x1 1/4, but are only 15mm wide, Araya rims with the same markings are about 20mm. Nashbar tires that are marked 27x1 1/4 are identical to Paselas that are 27x1 1/8. If you want to mount 27x1 tires, stay with a rim that is narrower between the beads.
