27" Tire Width Question

Apologies if this has been covered, can't seem to find a straight answer by searching.

Can I use smaller width tires on 1 1/4" Araya rims? For instance 1 1/8" or even 1"?

BTW the Panaracer in the rear of my 88 Schwinn WS is too tall and nearly rubs. Wondering if anyone else finds that a problem and if so what tires you use to leave room enough for fenders.

Thanks.

Bikes: 1977-78 Raleigh Professional - bought new, 1987 Shogun 400 (for the lady)

Using 1 & 1/8 probably, My wife's Shogun had 1 & 1/8 tires on 1 &1/4 rims for 20 years. As for 1 inch i wouldn't try that.

Bikes: riders:Schwinn Continental ('80), Specialized Crossroads Sport ('07), Schwinn Super Sport (73), Schwinn Superior (76), Projects: Schwinn Sprint ('74), Trek 800 & Schwinn Continental ('71)

Just picked up a 86 Schwinn Traveler from original owner, Weinmann 1-1/4" rims were fitted with 1-1/8" tires, same as details listing for the bikes specs from factory.

I am planning to replace with 1-1/4" tires.

No experience on narrower tire sizing.

I don't think the sell 27 by one inch anymore. I could be wrong but i was looking for some to fit a super skinny rim I had on a trek i was fixing and i couldn't find any anywhere just 1 1/8 and 1 1/4.

Not exactly performance, but might do the trick.

These are available as 27x1 and only $10 right now.

I have found quite a bit of variation in tire sizes labelled the same. Some 27 1/4's are about the same width as 27 1/8's and some that are the same width are considerably taller.

I was disappointed recently when I bought some Panaracer Pasela Tourguard 27 1/4's from Nashbar. I have these same tires on a different bike and even though they are labelled the same, the new ones are considerably wider.

I have a set of Panaracer Pasela Tourguard 27X1 on one of my Peugeots. I bought them about a year ago. As far as I know, they still make them.

I was bitten by this as well. I replaced a set of old Specialized Turbo 27x1 1/4 tires with Pasela Tourguards in the same size only to find that the Paselas were too big for the frame w/ fenders. It turns out the Specialized 1 1/4's had an actual diameter of only about 26mm while the Paselas were true to size. I stepped down to the 27x 1/18 Paselas, which fit fine and are almost identical to the Turbos in size. I would prefer to run the larger Paselas, but I would have to forgo the fenders, which I would prefer not to do right now. Anyway, caveat emptor.

There are variations in manufacturer's sizes for both tires and rims. I have wienmann rims that are clearly marked 27x1 1/4, but are only 15mm wide, Araya rims with the same markings are about 20mm. Nashbar tires that are marked 27x1 1/4 are identical to Paselas that are 27x1 1/8. If you want to mount 27x1 tires, stay with a rim that is narrower between the beads.

The Forte tires listed in the link are notorious for being smaller than listed size. I'm running two pair now; the 700x25 are more like 700x23 and the 27x1" are very, very skinny and went on the (proper) rims quite hard as well. No complaints with the tires, just smaller than marked.

I cannot believe the wide variation in actual tire width for any given nominal call-out size. My Bianchi takes only up to 700Cx25 true size, but Continental "700Cx28" tires fit OK.

Hard to say with any certainty unless you measure everything. Tire manufacturers lie about their tire size sometimes. Two of my rims in that general size (one a 27" the other a 700C) measure 25mm outside width. On one I have Panaracer Paselas in 700Cx28 which is equivalent to a 1 1/8 width. It actually measure 27mm. The other has 27x1" tires that measure 25mm. Both work fine. Once though I bought some 700Cx25 tires and they measure 22mm. They were definitely too narrow for my rims. Those Paselas are really tall for their width. They ride nice but I don't like the way they look.

Warning, the Araya rims are hookless (At least the ones I bought in 1976 are). I tried the Forte tires and they blew out within two blocks.

I am going to try Kendras next. I had a set on hand, but they are going on the flip Schwinn first...

I just ordered more Kenda K35s for $7.49 each at bicycle warehouse.
