Cars are a necessary form of transportation. If my girlfriend falls down the stairs and needs to go to the hospital with a broken leg, I'm not gonna pay for an ambulance, and I'm definitely not gonna throw her on my handlebars and bike her there.
I bike as much as possible, and walk when with people who don't ride, but at the end of the day, a car is necessary at times. I'm not going to throw the ingredients for a big dinner for my friends into my bag, and I'm not going to carry 4 cases of beer home in my bag on my bike. That's what the car is for.
get a cab.
I carry groceries and more than 4 cases of beer home by bicycle quite regularly.
such is life the big city - it's great - cars are practically unnecessary in daily life here. must suck to be in the suburbs / middle of nowhere where city planning and development failed by planning solely around the auto.
eventually, you wont be able to drive or at least driving will be a luxury that most people cannot enjoy . so the sooner you adjust to a car-free life, the better you'll turn out and less of a jolt it will be. research peak oil.
