the thing about a timetrial is, as long as it's not hilly, you're not going to do any shifting anyway so gears aren't typically necessary.
a tt with hills is a different story, though... your objective in a tt is to perform just at your lactic threshold so as not to blow up; climbing in a big speed ratio sorta hinders that.
