Peugeot question

So I'm in the mock up phase of my Peugeot build and ran into a problem trying to mount my front wheel. The axle does not fit into the dropout. My crappy slide caliper doesn't show much difference. The axle is a nutted 3/8". I assume the Pug is a close metric equivalent? Point is......What should I do? I don't want to file the dropout 'cause it is chrome and in good shape. I'd really prefer not to do a hub swap and I'm guessing finding an axle with the right cones to fit my hub would be a PIA.
Geez....This thing is fighting every step of the way!
On a positive note I finally received my Campy NR bottom bracket NOS in the box. Now I just need to decide on cranks (NR, NOS Tevano or Pro 5 VIS) and determine the chain line so I can make sure I have the right spindle. I still have to hunt down a stem and seat post too......
So ya! Just a bit of a venting I suppose. What should I do about this not fitting axle problem?

Thanks,
Kelly D
