Long time SPD user, first time in Sylvans/Straps

I've used SPD's on my fixed gear for ages. I am going on vacation for a few weeks down in Florida and will be bringing my bike. I was hoping to avoid the need to wear my Velcro cycle shoes everywhere I go. I frequent this location and there's lots of riding to shops/resteraunts/bars/etc.

I stopped by the LBS and got some MKS Sylvans, toe clips and straps. I have a size 12 foot, so the pedal seems pretty skinny and if I don't wear my thinnest pair of tennies then my foot rubs on the crank arms (I don't mind wearing a thinner pair of shoes)

This setup just doesn't seem comfortable or something. Maybe I'm just griping because I've only put about 400 feet on them since I installed them 30 minutes ago I'm not sure I'm even asking anything... except maybe is there a wider (or longer spindle) pedal I could find that's less track and more urban oriented?
