Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Long time SPD user, first time in Sylvans/Straps

I've used SPD's on my fixed gear for ages. I am going on vacation for a few weeks down in Florida and will be bringing my bike. I was hoping to avoid the need to wear my Velcro cycle shoes everywhere I go. I frequent this location and there's lots of riding to shops/resteraunts/bars/etc.

I stopped by the LBS and got some MKS Sylvans, toe clips and straps. I have a size 12 foot, so the pedal seems pretty skinny and if I don't wear my thinnest pair of tennies then my foot rubs on the crank arms (I don't mind wearing a thinner pair of shoes)

This setup just doesn't seem comfortable or something. Maybe I'm just griping because I've only put about 400 feet on them since I installed them 30 minutes ago I'm not sure I'm even asking anything... except maybe is there a wider (or longer spindle) pedal I could find that's less track and more urban oriented?

I would honestly skip out on the new pedals/straps and pick up a pair of touring/commuter shoes. I've got a pair of Shimano MT30's that I wear if I'm gonna be on/off the bike all day and don't feel like changing shoes. They're comfortable enough to walk around in and they don't look like space boots.

I was thinking going that route, but out of the 4 local bike shops in town, nobody carries anything like that. They carry space boots and more space boots. Not too many brands to choose from either... oh well. Perhaps someone in Florida will have some shoes I like I really wanted to get a pair of sandals that have the SPD bolts in them.. Keen makes a sweet pair, but again, impossible to find, even online.
