I've never seen a P-trail in person, much less ridden one, but it looks like it's some kind of compromise between a DJ and a trail hardtail. It looks to be spec'ed out like a Hardrock, only a little slacker and burlier.

Finding a DJ in your price range might be tough, plus they're less than ideal for riding trails. However, they're burlier and have better geometry for jumping than a normal XC or trail hardtail. So maybe something in the middle would suit your needs. Norco and Cove make quite a few bikes that fall into that middle category too, but they're a little more expensive.
