You should really check your set up on your fixed gear... if your knees hurt after two miles there is something wrong there.

Descending hills in the winter on a fixed gear is a wonderful experience and the control is amazing.

I ride a fixed gear for work (several actually) and have done some fairly long fixed rides and been happy as happy can be with the bike.
