I agree that FENIX is over-kill for hikers, but it's PERFECT for me on the run. I've tried nearly all of the latest-generation headlamps by Tikka, Black Diamond, Princetontec, and all were returned, since they failed when I used them for running (I ran 70 miles per week, mostly in the dark), at a pace of under 8min/mile, sometimes under 7min/mile. The Fenix is perfect for both those runs as well as on the bike at moderate speeds. Slower runners (9+min/mile) seem to have no problems with the Tikka lights, though, as well as people on really dark roads. (I'm in LA, so you need to compete with car lights or else your night vision gets washed out.)

For sure, I'd favor a standard LED headlamp for hiking and non-running outdoor stuff.

That headstrap pictured above looks pretty sweet - haven't seen that one before!
