Lack of headstraps to use LED flaslights

I'm continuously amazed at how few people use LED flashlights like the FENIX for cycling, running, hiking, etc. They're so good and so inexpensive that it seems silly to consider anything else.

I have noticed as well a recent proliferation of low-cost LED lights that come on a headstrap as well - by Petzl, Black Diamond, etc. These generally go for $35-$100 and granted are not for cycling use, but none of them get anywhere near the brightness of a Fenix.

It seems to be surprisingly hard to find a good headstrap for the FENIX and similar LED flaslights. I found two possible brands to choose from, and neither of them are great. The Jakstrap does have a nice downward pointing loop so you can aim your Fenix on the path in front of you -great for running.

Are there places where you can get a bigger selection of these headstraps for flashlights? It seems like a completely untapped market!

And on a related note, why hasn't Fenix moved to specifically market their lights to cyclists and runners? You won't find a single one on display at any major sporting good store, even the "hardcore" ones like REI. Talk about missing a target audience! I'm missing something big here, or else they definitely need to hire new marketing people (or any marketing people?)

I needed my morning tea, head straps you say?

I can probably do a shoulder, but wouldn't want a single 2AA on my head, unless it was on the crown.

I'm pretty sure what he means is a strap system that will allow the light to function as a headlamp directly on the head (similar to the Niteize headstrap). The trouble with Niteize, which I've tried to use for running, is that it doesn't hold the light in a good position and it's not secure enough to hold the light stable while running.

Yes, that is what I mean. I use the headstrap both for running, where it helps to be pointed downwards, and even for commuting, when I just put my helmet on while wearing the headstrap - seems to work ok and is only a bit tight on the fit.

FENIX really should get on the ball with their markets. I know this is a cycling forum, but with the BOOM in both bike commuting (oil!) and marathon participants (Oprah! - millions of people now!) who have to train at night nearly exclusively, they're missing possibly the biggest market out there, in my opinion. Every time I show up at a group run with it, folks are so impressed that I'm sure I could sell 'em every time if I was a salesperson.

Sorry, looks like that's already suggested, but my head is usually tilted down on my road bike, and don't think it would take the bouncing around I take on my mtn.bike. Back to the drawing board!

Here's exactly what you are looking for, made by Fenix.

Fenix is awkward to wear when hiking when compared to others such as Blk Diamond, Petzel etc etc. The Fenix run times are poor when compared to the others. Brightness appears to be the Fenix claim to fame and that is not what is needed by most hikers, campers, and kayakers. Try reading a map / chart with all those lumes. Plain and simple it is over kill times 500. They may be good as a flashlight however. In essence I'm not surprised at all. All the others are far more compact and much more easily adjustable when worn.

I provided a link above for a strap that would work with a fenix because that is what you asked for. But I have to admit, like the above poster, when I'm not on a bicycle I much prefer my Black Diamond "Zenix IQ" as a head light. I still carry the fenix, but use it as a hand held flashlight, just as it was designed to do.

I agree that FENIX is over-kill for hikers, but it's PERFECT for me on the run. I've tried nearly all of the latest-generation headlamps by Tikka, Black Diamond, Princetontec, and all were returned, since they failed when I used them for running (I ran 70 miles per week, mostly in the dark), at a pace of under 8min/mile, sometimes under 7min/mile. The Fenix is perfect for both those runs as well as on the bike at moderate speeds. Slower runners (9+min/mile) seem to have no problems with the Tikka lights, though, as well as people on really dark roads. (I'm in LA, so you need to compete with car lights or else your night vision gets washed out.)

For sure, I'd favor a standard LED headlamp for hiking and non-running outdoor stuff.

That headstrap pictured above looks pretty sweet - haven't seen that one before!
