Unfortunately, that opinion is shared by a large part of the U.S. population. Recently I was viewing some bicycle part on Amazon and I noticed that it wasn't categorized as being a sports item...it was listed under something like "toys and games."

The fact that bikes are seen as transportation vehicles rather than toys is why I enjoyed riding in Europe (mostly Germany in my case) so much. In three years of riding a couple hundred miles a week in Berlin, I never got "right-hooked" despite many of those miles were on a bike bath that was no more than a sidewalk. I guess drivers were much more likely to follow their training to look for bikes in those situations when they realize that it could be their own mother riding down to the corner Aldi for groceries.
