This bike is a 9spd bike?

If you want to take advantage of the cheap shifters, nashbar, then you can use alternate cable routing

to get it to work with 9speed if that is what you have.

If you just want to know why NOS is more expensive it may be due to the popularity of cyclocross and its love of 9speed.
