Almost impossible without wrecking it, in my opinion. I once tried to break a bit of old chain to make a chain whip, and it took me about 40mins to smash one link using a nail punch, hammer and a mallet.

I also thought I'd be clever a couple times by re-using Shimano pins when swapping chains from one bike to the other. I got away with it most times, but on two occasions the chain busted.
