They do have their place, though (although rubber is better), on unsealed-bearing pedals. If they're metal, they'd need to be o-ringed to keep the moisture out.

I saw those earlier today. Funny, they could be retrofitted with pins quite easily. Love the accommodation for reflectors
I was seeing those promoted as commuter pedals.
