Ok, how about this: Cotterless aluminum cranks became accepted slowly. Racing used steel cottered cranks through the 50s and perhaps into the '60s. The Peugeot competition bicycle that we most commonly know as the PX-10 and especially the PX-10E evolved from earlier versions that might date pack to the pre-cotterless days, but perhaps under a slightly different designation, and with the French racing gear of the day.
