Why not a new build? I just got done with a Steamroller. Not a fancy build, but decent. You can get a frame set shipped for ~$350 (I bought at an LBS for the same price, since they price matched). My specs are CaneCreek S3 headset, new takeoff Kore bar/stem, Nashbar brake/levers, Sugino RD2 crankset/BB, some take off SS wheels with flip-flop hub, seat post, Brooks saddle. All came out to about $700. The Brooks and the post I already had, so it didn't get put into the cost. Still not too bad, and better spec'd than the pre-built models. I doubt I'll have to touch the thing for a long time. (mechanically).
