ugh.
Why not a new build? I just got done with a Steamroller. Not a fancy build, but decent. You can get a frame set shipped for ~$350 (I bought at an LBS for the same price, since they price matched). My specs are CaneCreek S3 headset, new takeoff Kore bar/stem, Nashbar brake/levers, Sugino RD2 crankset/BB, some take off SS wheels with flip-flop hub, seat post, Brooks saddle. All came out to about $700. The Brooks and the post I already had, so it didn't get put into the cost. Still not too bad, and better spec'd than the pre-built models. I doubt I'll have to touch the thing for a long time. (mechanically).

Bikesdirect is coming out with a knock-off Steamroller called the "Kilo WT" later this summer. I'm itching to get my hands on one- complete bike for around $450.

Do a search and you can find the thread about it.

Because the difference between $700 and $300 is $400 dollars that I don't really think I should be spending on a bike.

If I build up what I have now, I can do it with about $300 and be mostly happy with it, but then over time add to it and make it better.

thanks for the advice everybody! I believe i have made my choice..........STEAMROLLER! The build does seem fun but in the end i think I would spend too much and wait forever on the parts. I did look at the IRO and Kilo but i think the steamroller will fair better though these Montana winters.

thanks again
