Upgrading trek 1000 to compact crankset

I have a 2007 trek 1000 with a triple, and I am tired of all the shifting issues. So far I have upgraded the wheels to neuvation wheels but have left everything else unchanged.

i was considering buying a SRAM Rival compact groupset for 650 dollars and having my LBS install it. Does that sounds like a silly idea considering the whole original bike cost that amount?

I was originally hoping to buy a used 105 groupset or something similar but it seems those work out to be betweeh 400 and 500 dollars anyway, so i thought that it doesn't make much sense to buy that instead of a brand new rival groupset.
