Also, as far as top-tube pads being useful, I commute on the cal-train every day, and there are a ton of ****ers who do not give a rat's ass about anyone's bike. My green bike(the one without a pad) has all kinds of nicks and dings from various bikes being piled on top of it. Bottom line, if you have to rack up next to (read: on top/bottom of) a bunch of other bikes, it doens't hurt to have a little protection if you value your bike's paintjob.
