Well do what you want, there's no point really to try convincing you of anything. Everybody has told you the answers for why things are the way they are. If you don't want to follow that's your perogative, but to most other cyclists you will look very odd and your arguments will sound ridiculous.

Edit: although I do think it was out of line for the guy to say anything. I see people doing strange stuff all the time, unless it is a danger to me I just keep going.
