My best advice is to ride early morning to avoid any peak traffic. Unfortunately, sometimes this is when the people in fast cars and fast motorcycles like to do their acts of stupidity.
When I did go on "fast" rides with my motorcycle buddies, we usually did it at 2 a.m. No cyclists out and certainly not many cars.
I'm both too...

And live right in the middle of a canyon racing Disneyland. When I hear those engines echoing through the canyons at 2 a.m. it's like beautiful music.
Being an individual I can only be personally responsible for my own biking behavior, and always defer to cyclists.
