How does seat posts quick release work?

- I have a bicycle with a seat tube that has the slit located on the REAR of the seat tube (slit facing rear wheel).

- I have another bicycle with a seat tube that has the slit located in the FRONT of the seat tube (slit facing top tube).

I took off the quick release clamps off both bikes. Now, I don't know which way to put it back on. Do the bolts go where the slit is?

Does it matter?
