Adaptive Cycling: Handcycles, Amputee Adaptation, Visual Impairment, and Other Needs Have a need for adaptive equipment to ride to compensate for a disability or loss of limb or function? This area is for discussion among those of us in the cycling world that are coming back from traumatic circumstances and tell the world, "No, you are not going to beat me down!"

Hello, Mike. Welcome to Bikeforums. I'm a legally blind cyclist but it hasn't kept me down.
I ride a Trek 850 Antelope mountain bike for touring, road cycling and recreational bicycling.
I introduced myself in further detail when I started the thread entitled "How many of you have a disability?"

See you around the forums.

Welcome Mike! Did you ride a recumbent bike that made your back issues worse? Prior to using a handcycle?

I have an '03 Specialized Allez that I use for everything.

Hi Mike,

I'm a handcyclist in Lake Geneva, Wi, with a big dog who loves to run! We ran all winter but for down time to repair flat tires! Yep! It was a blast and I needed to wear a ski bibs and well braking on snow is a bit tricky. But it's run or get licked to death! Yeah I need snow tires for my handcycle and I saw a new hill climbing cycle in snow last night - youtube - i think.

Got my Invacare Top End from my friends at El Tour de Tucson back in year 2000. Most recently I've been training my dog, a rhodesian ridgeback mutt, to run with me. Trick is ... she will stage right for squirrels and speeds up when she sees another dog. Yep. I've been up a few trees and in a few ditches but ... what a blast! Best commands are: attention - when she sees other animals, easy - when we approach intersections, and wait - when we need to stop. She runs on my right side and I pedal with my left arm.

Like to hook up with other handcyclists in Wisconsin (only been here less than a year) and find a way to play in a few handcycling events if you know of any. Not sure events will allow my dog to run with me, but ..... well, that isn't going to stop us because these girls just want to have fun! Maybe we need to get a few tours set up that will! I'd love to train more dogs! It's a whole lot easier going uphill except when she decides to take a break half way up! Oh Boy! or should I say - Oh Brake!
